Module 3.4 Problem-Solving in Practice

Q Evaluate As you learned during this chapter, S.A.R.A. is a problem-solving model first used by police officers practicing Problem Oriented Policing (POP) in Newport News, Virginia in the mid 1980s. The S.A.R.A. problem-solving model consists of four parts: (S) Scanning - which is the process of identifying the problem. (A) Analysis – which is the process of understanding the problem. (R) Response – which is the process of developing a solution to the problem and (A) Assessment - the process of evaluating the effectiveness of the solution on the problem. Keying in on the initial step of the S.A.R.A. model SCANNING is paramount when tackling any problem as a police officer. Analyze, Respond, and Assess You are newly assigned to the Community Policing Unit of a small police department and a local church has asked you to come and hear some neighborhood concerns. The moderator of this question and answer session identifies a major problem stating: “drug dealers have moved into the house across the street from the church and are actively dealing and using drugs within view of the church.” After this introduction, members of the church began to voice their concerns: • Mrs. Brown stated that since the drug dealers moved in her house was burglarized. • Smith said that he has been watching for a month from his bedroom window and he sees what appears to be mid-level drug dealers selling to low-level drug dealers. • Johnson stood up and said her car was broken into last week. • Quimby said his son was recruited as a lookout for the police. Based on your reading and understanding of the S.A.R.A. model, complete the remaining three (3) steps of the S.A.R.A. model for two (2) of the concerned residents that voiced issues. ANALYZE, RESPOND, and ASSESS their problem as if you were the officer receiving the information. Explain your position with a response paper of about one-and-a-half pages (400 words) following the APA writing style. The response papers in this course combine to make up 35% of your course grade.

In this week's reading material, We have learned the S.A.R.A model, which is aimed to assist the police department in capturing the offenders with an appropriate plan. If a police officer comes up with a strong strategy, he can capture the offender easily. For instance, in this Church Case, a complaint of drug dealing within view of the Church is reported by many community members. Firstly, being a police officer, I would analyze the situation completely and try to figure out which contributing factors are playing their role in violating drug abuse.
